Abstract: The objective of the project was to evaluate the transfer and bioaccumulation of emergent contaminants from abiotic environmental factors to aquatic organisms and plants. The project validate-in house three analytical methods for ultratrace detection of three distinct emergent contaminants classes: (a) endocrine disruptors (UV filters and degradation products) from surface water and wastewater, (b) pharmaceuticals (anti - diabetics and metabolites) from surface water and wastewater, (c) herbicides (synthetic auxins) from water, vegetation and soil samples. The validated methods were used to quantify the content of endocrine disruptors, anti - diabetics and metabolites, synthetic auxins in wastewater, surface water, soil and vegetation. The transfer factors of the toxic metals As, Cd, Ni and Pb from the polluted soil to the roots and aerial parts of chamomile (Matricaria Chamomilla) and mint (Mentha Piperita) were determined. The degree of contamination with organic pollutants adsorbed on microplastics from Jiu river was evaluated (upstream and downstream of the wastewater treatment plants Targu-Jiu and Craiova respectively).

Abstract: The EMERGMET Project is focused on a major interest topic for human health and also for environmental protection, namely the increasing degree of contamination of water, soil, sewage sludge and biota with emergent xenobiotic compounds. The main project objective is development of new and complex analytical methodologies comprising extraction, purification and concentration methods together with sensitive and specific instrumental methods, all of them employed to determine different representative groups of emergent contaminants and metabolites from relevant and complex matrices: surface and waste water, soil, sewage sludge and biota.

Title: The accumulation of potentially hazardous industrial additives in sewage sludge
Authors: Niculae, Andrei; Chiriac, Florentina Laura
Abstract: The project aimed at developing new methods for the determination of organic compounds such as potentially hazardous industrial additives from sewage sludge by LC-MS / MS. In this project, two LC-MS / MS methods were developed, one for the separation, identification and quantification of flame retardants such as α-, β- and γ- Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) diastereoisomers and the second for the determination of plasticizers (Bisphenol A) and antioxidants (Butylhydroxyanisole) from sewage sludge samples. The interest analites were isolated from the complex matrices using the ultrasonic assisted extraction method. Detection limits were between 0.07-0.14 ng/g for α-, β- and γ-HBCD diastereoisomers and 0.41 ng/g for BPA and 0.59 ng/g for BHA respectively.

Abstract: Development of analytical methods for the determination of some organo phosphorus pesticides included in the list of priority substance (Chlorfenvinphos, Chlorpyrphos, Trychlorfon, Dichlorvos, Cumaphos) form wastewater using GC-NPD technique and HPLC-UV technique. Two extraction techniques were tested : Liquid-Liquid Extraction(LLE) with Hexane and Solid Phase Extraction ( SPE) on C18 adsorbent with different extraction solvents. Both methods indicated a good recovery (83%-94%). The methods were validated “in-house”. The detection limits (0.02 μg/L – 0.06 μg/L) were situated under the imposed concentrations according to the
legislation for priority substances. The methods are used for the analytical control of organophosphorus pesticides from different categories of water samples.
